Filosofo Old-Style Upload Plugin

What does Filosofo Old-Style Upload do?

Filosofo Old-Style Upload is a WordPress 2.0+ plugin that restores the control over uploading and thumbnail-creation that earlier versions of WordPress used to provide.

Why would I want to do that?

WordPress 2.0 introduced a new in-line uploader that’s very convenient for ordinary users, but it eliminated the control over the upload directory and thumbnail creation that many of us were used to. This plugin restores the old upload features without affecting the new uploading capabilities.

Will it work on my blog?

This plugin is designed only for WordPress 2.0 blogs and newer. Older versions of WordPress already have this feature.

Where do I download it?

However, previous versions of WP allowed admins to create custom paths for uploads… mine points to a directory I created that is not, obviously, part of the default WP installation. The moved upload feature in WP2.0 wants to upload files to a specific location that doesn’t exist, and complains that permissions on the server won’t let it create this new location. Nor is there any way to tell it where file uploads should really go. While the permissions problem is easy enough to fix, I don’t want uploaded files in two places, and don’t want to move old files and worry about updating paths in the the database or any **** like that. Handily, I found this Old Style Upload plugin, which restores the lost functionality… but doesn’t fix the much-better-placed new upload tool (and, strangely, seems to have screwed up the dimensions of the Link Pop-up Window, unless that sudden change was just an incredible coincidence), which I would rather be using. This is a stupid mistake that should not have been made. Hi, I was happy to find this plugin, but when I went to upload my posts from TypePad, I received the following message:

It doesn’t look like you can use the file upload feature at this time because the directory you have specified (/home/onemind/public_html/trepnetwork/wp-content) doesn’t appear to be writable by WordPress. Check the permissions on the directory and for typos.

I’ve been dealing with this problem all day. All of the required directories have sufficient priviledges. I don’t understand what the problem is. Can you help?

Hi,
I desparately need to have the option of setting the width at a custom number and have the height remain proportional.

How can I change the code to do this?

I am very frustrated :-( No thumbnail plugin I have found can do this. All offer only custom largest side. This doesn’t work for me.

Thanks!

Don, this plugin uses the wp_create_thumbnail function, which is part of the WordPress core code. You can find it in wp-admin/admin-functions.php in WordPress version 2.0.3.

So one way to achieve what you want is to edit wp-admin/admin-functions, changing part of the wp_create_thumbnail function from

if ($image_attr[0] > $image_attr[1]) {
$image_width = $image_attr[0];
$image_height = $image_attr[1];
$image_new_width = $max_side;

$image_ratio = $image_width / $image_new_width;
$image_new_height = $image_height / $image_ratio;
//width is > height
} else {
$image_width = $image_attr[0];
$image_height = $image_attr[1];
$image_new_height = $max_side;

$image_ratio = $image_height / $image_new_height;
$image_new_width = $image_width / $image_ratio;
//height > width
}

to something like

$image_width = $image_attr[0];
$image_height = $image_attr[1];
$image_new_width = $max_side;

$image_ratio = $image_width / $image_new_width;
$image_new_height = $image_height / $image_ratio;
//width is > height

16. filosofo commented on June 13, 2006 at 11:10 pm | Permalink
filosofo

Don, actually this plugin’s aims are very simple: to reproduce the old upload features of WordPress prior to version 2.0. The month- and year-based folder organization is part of the new and entirely different uploading system. So for now I don’t see those features becoming part of this plugin.

What a beautiful plugin, thank you! I’m hoping to use it conjunction with bistr-o-mathik’s Image Browser plugin. It works fine, actually, but Image Browser looks for thumbnails that have thumb- as the prefix to the original’s filename.

Is there some way I can modify your plugin’s code to achieve that?

Again, thank you!
Dave

18. filosofo commented on June 15, 2006 at 5:02 pm | Permalink

Dave, you should be able to make the “thumb-” prefix appear by adding the following line to the bottom of the plugin, right before the “
?>
“:

add_filter('thumbnail_filename', create_function('$a','return "thumb-" . $a;'));

Hello there. This plugin is perhaps the closest thing to what I’m looking for, though I’m not sure. See, I don’t mind the new upload feature in WP. I don’t mind the new default upload folder either. However, I do mind the default size of the thumbnails it generates; 96px is too small.

I’m considering using this pluging solely because it seems to give some control back in terms of the size of the created thumbnails. I’ve looked everywhere for an answer, but I can’t seem to find one. I’d just like to be able to create thumbnails that are 280px wide (with proportional height) with every picture upload. Not 96px. Is there a way to modify the code so that this works, properly, in every browser?

dponce80, I’m not sure if you’re asking about this plugin or not, but this plugin lets you create thumbnails of any width; it doesn’t matter what browser you’re using.

Hi… yes, I realize that. What I mean is, if there could be a way to tweak the WP so that I can still use the new upload feature, but when inserting a thumbnail, i’d like for it to be larger than the default currently set. Right now it produces a very small thumbnail… I’d just like it a little bigger.

I’ll use this plugin if there’s no way, but do you know if there is?

Thanks

dponce80, that inflexibility of thumbnail size is one reason I created this plugin.

Hi, I have your plugin working, thanks! I can upload and set options, but (a) is there any way then to browse the uploaded images? At the moment, I must keep separate track of URL for each, plus sizing info. Also, (b) can I bulk upload via ftp to save doing them one at a time, and (c) when I’m editing post/page, I still get the WP2.1 inline image feature, but I cannot browse any image I have uploaded via your plugin.

Using WP2.1.

I cannot seem to find any instruction on how to do A, B, or C that I mention — if you could provide links to relevant info or an answer, that would be most appreciated, thank you!

Hello Dean,

Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to implement the ideas you mention.

What I would like to do sometime is write another plugin that replaces the 2.0+ inline uploader with one that allows you to set the thumbnail size.

Thanks for your reply filosofo. It seems kinda crazy, but I find it intriguing that WordPress doesn’t really have any in-built/native super cool file management for things other than images (eg doc pdf xls) — nor a bulk upload feature etc — I guess that’s an issue of WordPress coming from a blog starting point rather than a CMS starting point.

Anyway, I’ll keep an eye out for any updates you create, thanks!

I’d like to use your plugin to upload those files I need to be in a directory different than the dafault WP upload directory (which I moved from /wp-content/uploads to /uploads). I created the directory /uploads/audio, set its path in your plugin’s options page and changed the allowed file extensions to mp3, ogg and so on. The permissions of /uploads/audio are set to 775, just like those of /uploads and its subdirectories (drwxrwxr-x). The standard WP upload script works fine but the Old-Style Upload plugin returns the following error:
“It doesn’t look like you can use the file upload feature at this time because the directory you have specified (/uploads/audio) doesn’t appear to be writable by WordPress. Check the permissions on the directory and for typos.”

The options for this plugin are under Options > Uploads.

That’s fine, I’d found them and changed the default URI to my custom path (/uploads/audio). Directory /uploads is writable by WordPress, that’s where I upload files through the standard interface; even though everything seems to be set right, you plugin can’t upload to /uploads/audio. What may not be working? I am using WordPress 2.2.1 and the latest version of your plugin.

Hi,

I am having problems with making the plugin work. After the activation it seems to show up fine under Admin->Uploads and Admin->Options->Uploads. However, whenever I tried to use it or change any settings I recieve “Cannot load filosofo-old-style-upload.php”.

Guess I’m too thick to understand, but what is the difference between this plug-in and simply ftping files??

Since my site is in its startup stages, I will be uploaded almost 200 pdfs and each one needs to be linked back to its link text. I’m not looking forward to that at all. Will this plug-in help reduce the labor? If so, I’m certainly willing to have a go at it.
